HOW DO YOU USE YOUR WINCH? CONTEST WINNERS AND ENTRIES

Posted by Kenneth from Minnesota on May 01, 2007
When I got my Rincon 680 I couldn't afford a winch so a friend of mine gave me his old one, a Ramsey I think, so I had confidence if I were to get stuck I could get out. Well in Minnesota when the snow melts the lowland trails become wetland marshes and in rutted trails the water can be chest deep in spots. I was riding just a couple days ago about 3 miles from home with my dog following along and decided to try a trail I had found this past winter. There was a nice size water hole at the beginning that took the Rinny up to the fenders. As I continued the trail got more muddy and I came to what seemed maybe a 10 foot stretch of muddy rutted trail. The dog went through and watching him struggle I could tell it was thick so I got speed and hit the hole and made it about 5 feet before I came to a dead stop. I was stuck and stuck well. When I got off the ruts were hip deep, the tires were just floating and the wheeler was hung up on the frame. No problem, I got a winch, right?...Wrong! I hooked up to the nearest tree and attempted to reel....Nothing, no pull at all!??! Continue Reading

Having just moved from the UK, I don't have any pictures of using a winch. I have just purchased a 2007 Can Am 400 Outlander which a friend won in a competition but did not come with a winch, but I have been told the one thing I should fit is a winch. Which one? Everybody seemed to come back to one winch, "WARN". Here are a couple of pictures of my new toy.

I don't get my quad stuck too often but when I do, I get it stuck bad. These are a few photos of me and my buddy trying not to get stuck. But there have been many situations when we were not fortunate enough to have a camera with us, that we depended solely on our trusty WARN winches. Always there to shine light on your sticky situations. Looking to upgrade winches just because I love WARN products so much.

Yes I need to use my WARN winch on every poker run that I enter. I also purchased a Glacier plow system and replaced the wire rope (after breaking it a couple of times) with WARN's 8' synthetic rope for plowing and haven't broken it yet!

Mud Nationals 2007. I own an '07 Brute Force 750, with 8 inch lift and 29.5x12 tires. When this bike needs a winch they are on board. There is a WARN 3000 with synthetic rope on front. And a 2500 WARN on the rear. Those winches pulled me out of everything I could get into at the Nats. After riding all day and starting into the night, we ran into some thick belt-burning, axle-snapping mud. A friend on a stock 700 Polaris decided to hit a h ole he should have never been in. After burning up his WARN pulling out of the hole, I came in to assist. The hole was basically square, the sides were straight up and the suction had a firm grip. After pulling him down one side and back up the other, I got pulled in. I pulled myself free then back to him. I used the rear winch to hold me in one spot so I could pull him out. This is when the rear winch let go. Without it I couldn't get traction to pull. We decided then to pull mine over the front of his and winch the front up. This worked, but I blew out both lower ball joints. We were close to giving up then, when another group of riders came through. A guy in a Rhino with a WARN stopped to help. We doubled up on the winching and pulled him free. Man what a night. Lessons learned were: carry and use the snatch block whenever you can. They would have saved a lot of wear and tear on both us and the bikes. WARN guys stick together because you never know what lies underneath the next mudhole!

WARN winches are not only handy in mud, snow, and woods, but in the sand also. While doing a little "crevice crawling" at the Oregon Dunes over the New Years holiday, this poor fellow stuck himself pretty good in a rather large crevice. Luckily, my WARN 3.0 was up to the task. In a matter of minutes he was out and on his way.

I have a 2006 Polaris Sportsman 450 and I use my winch for pulling me out when I get stuck in the mud and to lift up and down my plow.

I took my youngest son for a tour to find mud...well we found it! A little more than I was hoping for! We were completely stuck with no trees in sight, nothing but mud. We had to call a friend to hook up the winch to and eventually we were back on our way.

You can't see it in this photo because it's submerged under the mud, but there's a WARN 2500 on my Foreman. Fortunately for me, it has proven totally reliable, and considering how I use (abuse) it, that's impressive. It's never even been apart for cleaning or re-greasing.

I've got a 2nd ATV now (Rincon) but no winch yet because I'm waiting for the wireless XT30 to be released. I took it riding in an area still covered in snow, but wouldn't have if I didn't know that two other machines in our group also had WARN winches (2nd picture).

I hate relying on others to pull me out, but getting that wireless remote will sure be sweet, since I'll only have to slog through the mud or snow once to get to an anchor point.

We were ridin' in the rain and my friend got stuck in some deep mud and water, so I pulled him out with my WARN winch on my Honda Rancher.

I own a Rubicon 500, and it is outfitted with a 3.0ci winch, WARN bumper, and the 424 disconnect system. During spring, the backlands get pretty sloppy and friends and I take the four wheelers out there. I've had to use the 3.0ci to pull out both a 250R and 250 Bayou, as well as my own Rubicon, multiple times. The pictures show the situations that the 250R has been in, and in each case the 3.0ci has pulled it out like a champ. It has worked like a champ every time I've had to use it.

On a side note, last year I outfitted the Rubicon with the WARN Bumper, and less than a day later it got tested when my friend ran the Rubicon into a tree at about 15-20 mph. He was fine, and MUCH to my surprise the Rubicon had suffered less damage than both me and my friends thought. Everyone who hears that story is nothing but impressed by the quality of your products. If I hadn't had that bumper mounted there, I probably would have had a totaled four wheeler, instead of just replacing a luggage rack and handlebar. The bumper doesn't even show any signs of an impact due to it's strength and construction...it's safe to say that every ATV I own from now on will have both a WARN winch and bumper to match! Thanks for making recoveries easier and repair bills less!

I have a 2006 Yamaha Rhino. I have a 2500 lb. WARN winch on it. Its my "Rhino Saver". If I did not have my WARN winch my Yamaha Rhino would be out in the woods sinking in the mud. I took it out in the 2007 Nor' Easter and the ground was terrible. I ride where no truck can go. I have had WARN product for a while and they are the best.
